A fourth engine for the famous Audi soft-top as new 1.8 T petrol version is launched in the UK. A fourth engine option has been added to the iconic Audi Cabriolet range this week, with a four-cylinder 1.8T unit joining the existing UK V6 petrol power units of 2.4 and 3-litres and the unique to Audi 2.5-litre TDI-engined soft top.

The sought after A4 Cabriolet can now be had with a range of power outputs from 220 PS* to the 163 PS* of the new model. This latest version of Audi’s responsive and efficient 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit is available to order now, priced at £24,050 OTR. With demand so strong for the new Cabriolet in Britain, Audi UK has secured an increase in right-hand-drive production capacity for all petrol and TDI A4 Cabriolet models this year. This is to ensure that customer’s orders placed now can be fulfilled in the first quarter of 2003 (dependent on specification). With 163 PS* and peak torque of 225Nm (166lb ft) available from just 1,950rpm, the new A4 Cabriolet 1.8 T very closely matches its smooth 2.4 V6 petrol counterpart (170 PS*) in terms of performance, but it will deliver power in its own distinctive way. Customers can now choose between a smooth 6-cylinder engine, or the unmistakable ‘punch’ of a turbo-four. Equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox, it will be capable of accelerating to 62mph from rest in 9.4 seconds (2.4 - 9.7 seconds) and will reach a top speed, where permissible, of 140mph (2.4 – 139mph). Its keen performance will be combined with competitively modest fuel consumption giving up to 33.2mpg on the combined cycle (2.4 – 28.8mpg), and relatively low CO2 output of 204g/km (2.4 – 235g/km) The acclaimed Audi multitronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) will also be available for the 1.8 T. In contrast to most conventional automatic rivals, the unique Audi CVT system has little or no effect on performance (9.3 seconds/ 136mph), and no impact whatsoever on fuel consumption, while at the same time assisting its impressively low emissions. Standard equipment for all A4 Cabriolet models includes 16-inch ‘5-arm Aero’ alloy wheels, an electrically operated hood, remote control central locking activating an alarm with interior microwave protection, electronic climate control, a leather 4-spoke multifunction steering wheel and a Concert audio system with single CD player. An automatic roll-over protection system also adds to the extensive list of safety features already fitted to A4 saloon and Avant models. Sport versions gain striking 17-inch ‘5-spoke star’ alloy wheels with 235/45 R17 tyres, sports suspension, a sports leather steering wheel and sports seats with electric lumbar support adjustment. The new A4 Cabriolet range takes over from the instantly recognisable original which began production ten years ago, a car that is still widely regarded as a distinct Audi Milestone. The all new current car with its wider range of power units its almost certain to sell in greater numbers in the UK than anywhere in the world, just as its predecessor did until production ceased in 1999. *The maximum power output figures are quoted in PS (Pferdestärke, which is the metric equivalent of brake horsepower). To convert from metric to imperial horsepower, divide the PS figure by 1.0139.
