Detroit (ALMS Rd10) - Race Report

The diesel-engined Audi of Allan McNish claimed third place overall – second in class – in the 10th round of the American Le Mans Series in Detroit today (SAT).

Dumfries-born McNish, 37, started his Audi R10 TDI from LM P1 class “pole” – seventh overall – on the tight 2.096-mile, 14-corner temporary Belle Isle street circuit situated on a parkland island in the Detroit River.
McNish handed over his Audi to co-driver Dindo Capello placed first after 1.5hrs during the second of four full course cautions brought about after accidents on the tight and narrow track.

But a wheel nut problem saw the Italian resume in only third place and then found himself demoted to fourth by the fast starting “sister” Audi of Emanuele Pirro as the 165min race re-started which ultimately saw the Porsche of Romain Dumas snatch the outright win from Pirro with just four minutes remaining.

Allan commented: “Dindo found himself baulked at the re-start with 50mins to run when the leading Porsche was slow at the green flag and then we lost valuable time to the leading two cars trying to make up places from fourth.

“But second and third places overall for Audi, on possibly the least suited circuit for our R10 TDI, is a positive result. I had grabbed the lead 10mins before I pitted to Dindo after almost 1½ hours during a full course yellow but we encountered a nut problem on the front left wheel which cost us valuable seconds and dropped us into the pack.”

Audi’s ninth LM P1 1-2 finish of the season – a record 20th consecutive class win for Audi Sport North America - earns the German car maker an eighth successive Manufacturers title in the American series.

The Pirro/Marco Werner Audi, which started eighth, finished 5.948secs behind the lighter, more nimble race winning LM P2 class Porsche (Romain Dumas/Timo Bernhard) with the McNish/Capello Audi third, a further 12.022secs adrift.

The penultimate round of the 12-race ALMS championship is staged at Road Atlanta on 6 October – the 1,000-mile “Petit Le Mans” race running for a 10th time.
