Hi guys and girls,

I have a very annoying issue with my car which started a couple of months ago. Not getting worse or better. Hoping somebody here would have an idea or two please.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CUMpEQp5-w

Car garages I have visited just want me to leave them with the car for a couple of hours. So that’s £100 gone straight away!

I suspect the noise is coming from the catalysts or exhaust perhaps heat shield. The sound certainly comes from that location anyway.

This irritating noise only happens under low revs (pulling away etc) and not constant once moving only initially.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Thanks,
Chris.

Hi,

Listened to the noise, and it sounds similar to my friends' 1.8T. Does it only happen on startup, i.e does it go when warm?

You could try rattling the cat a little to see whether there are loose parts in the cat (Don't hit it though, as the ceramic is delicate!). Sometimes, if they have suffered impact damage, they rattle, as the inside of them are brittle. This normally shows itself by little bits shooting out of the exhaust though..... Shock

Failing that, check the obvious heatshield etc.

I note someone on YouTube said about the turbo shaft bearings being dodgy. Has it had regular oil changes with good oil? Has it been driven hard and not allowed to run for a minute or so to cool down before switching off? Poor oil circulation, and not allowing them to cool can ruin turbo bearings.

Pete

Sounds like the nut that holds the fan blade on the turbo has come loose, I used to change a few for that when I was in the main dealer network.

Hi,

The problem was with the turbo waste gate, flapping.
Shorty after the turbo was fixed, the cat flange sheared off the turbo. Oh what fun!

All good now though.
