Evening all
I picked up my B4 2.0E this afternoon, and a puzzling fault developed on my 150 mile drive home. If you are below 2000 RPM (1800 seems to be the specific point) and you give more than 1/2 throttle it seems to cough. It pulls through fine to the redline and above 2k it isn't a problem.
Any thoughts as to what I should look at 1st?

Cheers

Craig

Hi,

To me it sounds like it could be an electrical misfire? However, if it's the ABK engine have a look at the ecu relay before you do anything else.

I'm not sure on the engine code, but its the 2.0 8v engine so it looks right. A trip to Audi during the week then I think, cheap enough to buy a new one just in case and keep the old one as a spare

The ABK is the 115hp engine with multupoint inj, there is a singlepoint inj model with about 90 hp if that helps, but the ABK uses the suspect relay.
If you want to eliminate the relay by all means do so, but as I said in the other thread, you can fairly easily pop the cover off and inspect the soldering on the pcb.

Well some progress has been made, but was a struggle Sad

Audi finally came good with the new relay 30 yesterday morning, so I though I'd crack on and change it this afternoon, it'll only be a quick 5 min job Razz

After unbolting the lower section of dash, I eventually found the relay, swapped it over and tried the ignition.

All the lights come on, but nothing Sad so an hour of sorting through wires under the dash, and I find that a wire had been cut and rejoined on the back of the ignition barrel Sad So out with the soldering iron and that's repaired properly and back in action. Quick test drive after putting it all back together, and the mis has gone Smile

Nice find! I guess the relay was not really needed at this time? Or did you look inside the old one?

I haven't looked inside the old one yet, and today it came back again Sad But less often and not as bad

So will be cleaning out the airflow meter and trying to sort out the right cap and rotor arm for it

could be the air flow meter electrics playing up, my abk did this , it took me ages to find the problem and sort it out, once you have tried all the obvious things and had no success, you could try another air flow meter and see how it runs then, they come up on ebay now and then.
Have had a fault code read done? you can buy a cheap ebay lead and 2+2 adapter for less than a shop charges for a simple fault dtc read, you can download the free ross-tech vcds programme and see whats going on with the engine management.

I shall have a look at that, I'm thinking that giving it a good clean out first is a good plan.

I haven't had the codes read yet, and you might be right that a basic code reader could be a good investment

Just give everything a good clean first. And do all the usual service stuff.

Make sure you clean all the breather pipes out, and check for air leaks around the air intake. Also give the ISV valve a good clean out with something. Very Happy sorted

My ABK tends to like its lambda sensors so check the volatage fluctuation on that too.

PS if you get a lead that will read the codes properly let me know where you got it. you will need the OBD to the 2x2 converter too.
