fuel sender

trying to find a circuit dia' showing fuel sender/dashboard gauge. The haynes manual doesnt show fuel sender or dash gauge.
gauge is erratic, never goes to empty, dash low fuel warning light comes on intermittently. Have swapped sender unit for new one but problem remains. Any ideas? Rgds DW.
car is A3, ATD, 8L1, 1.9, TDI SE, 2002.

This will be an earth problem.

Thanks mike, will start looking for bad earths, mind you it would be easier if I had a diagram. Where is my post being moved to??
