Hello all,
Just been to my local Audi breaker and have found the most immaculate
black 20v Quat that ive ever seen. This car has to be scrapped or track raced only as its victim to the governments 2 grand a car scrapage scheme. I could have cried!
He is based in Hockcliff Buckinghamshire and I have his permission to give his number 01525210978.
The car is complete at the moment with a perfect and clean engine and all parts, even the paint and front wings are perfect.
Good luck all regards dingbat |

I was under the impression that the scrappage scheme required the vehicle dismantler to provide a Certificate of Destruction to show that the vehicle had been permanently rendered un-roadworthy, in order for the car dealer to get his £1000.
Shouldn't stop it being broken for parts though. |

They all in end up in salvage yards / breakers.
Scrappage was due to stop at the end of August. Was it extended ? |

I know they asked to extend it but never heard if it has been. Had the 30,000 applications been taken? |

Hello again,
Car is a 1990 90 saloon 20v Quattro, looks like its just been pushed out of the showroom. 119000 on the clock but the condition is stunning.
I hate this scrappage thing but I suppose it means more spares for us all. I know one thing their going to have to wait another 10yrs for my old 2.2E! |

with regard to spotting our sort of cars in scrappys and threads like this, is a "scrappy watch" thread worth slotting in somewhere?
for instance - the scrappy i went to last week had about 4 80s, a 90 and a coupe - the second coupe i've seen there in 3 years of sporadic visits...
what i bought for £25 would have cost me £85 + postage off a seller on ebay at the mo...
ebay = |

If money was no issue we would all be driving R8s and Shorties, and there would be no recession so the government would not have even introduced this scrap scheme.
I have moaned about the scrappage scheme myself but lets look at it seriously. If you have a car that is worth somewhere between £500 and £1500 if it is a minter are you going to spend weeks trying to sell it on autotrader. Or are you going to go and get a guaranteed £2000 from your local dealer and have no hassle of waiting for people to come and see it, haggling etc.
Even if it is a 90 Sport in black you would be hard pushed to find someone willing to pay £2k for it.
There was a 16v quattro on ebay that has took about 6 weeks to sell at £850. |

Hibby's right, it is the easy option so you can understand why folk do it.
If you could be arsed, you could sell it privately for say £1250 - 1500 and then go in no PX and negotiate the same level of discount on a new car and double your money.
It's all down to time and effort really. |

....mmmm..yes but ,is it not all a big con ? do you get two g off new cars only ? in which case they re about 2 grand over priced any way, and you ve signed on for hp. If the person owning a quattro wanted credit terms he could have got them without resorting to handing over our gems to the scrapper.does the scap man get it for nothing ? how does it work ?most cars bought on finance never see the day they re payed off anyway.and what does "disposed" of mean? |

The disposed fo question is a good one. I understand that they must never be seen on the road again but does this mean they are crushed? Broken for spares? Sold as unregistered track cars? Who knows? |

breaker I spoke to said they have to cut the roof off so the shell is unusable - however he also said good ones are exported to Poland - therefore never seeing BRITISH roads again
mate of mine has just scrapped a perfectly good R reg Honda CRV, got 2k against a new Suzuki Swift GTI.. interest free finance, 3yrs free servicing, free insurance and 3yr warranty. No brainer really, still a shame the car went, he was actually quite upset about it |

soooo..Mmmm..... 1.whats in it for the car scrappers /dismantlers? 2. if its not to be seen on GB roads again ,would it not be better for the car to go to metal processors to be crushed? 3.can the rest of the car be sold for parts? and what proof that the car has been disposed of ie documentation?
needs to be submitted? there are a good few un answererd questions to this scrappage scheme Whats that ticking? |

And then sell his beloved audi 80 ,that he s had for more than two years, in the back lot as a'used audi'?? |

Audi don't care (as many other dealers don't), they discount the car by £1000 (which you could probably haggle more than anyway) PLUS get a grand from the government.
The buyer drives away in a new Audi so the dealer has a better chance of seeing it back for servicing and hence make more money where as theolder car would probably go to an independant anyway.
I guess the dealers have to file it as scrapped to DVLA or else the dealer won't get their money. The scrappies themselves I guess can sell bits for spares as long as the chassis isn't put back on the road and someone tries to re-register it. |

With most car firms verging on utter bankruptcy, it is to bolster the ailing car industry! Sales are so bad they need the public to keep buying new cars. So the scrappage scheme is to help solve that problem, albeit short term, cars that are either rare/ classic or verging on classic that DONT get traded in i can only see going up in value, or getting harder to find. On the sad end of the spectrum inevitably some crackers will go.
Although can the scrapper sell a car off that has already been part of the scheme? If it was a track only car you could make something special.
Time to investigate |

I'm not sure but assume that the chassis number will be logged as scrapped so if you try and re-instate the shell with that chasiss number they'll not let you.
Who knows how government red tape works???? |

Now things are getting confusing....
Under the terms of the Scrappage Scheme, it would appear that the dealer doesn't get their payout from HM Govt until they present their copy of the Certificate of Destruction from the scrapper.
If there are intact cars sitting in breakers yards that have come in under the Scheme, how can CoDs have been issued?
Needless to say, as someone who's spent most of my motoring life keeping my (older) cars going by recycling spares from far-flung breakers yards, I think Car Scrappage Scheme, with the whole "once it's in the Scheme, it's got to be crushed, even if you change your mind" idea was more about making headlines than anything else.
All the best,
PB |
