what hardware to get?

Having recently 'joined the family' I'm looking to increase my toolkit, particularly VAG COM (VCDS) diagnostic.

I've already got an oldish XP laptop that's got both serial and USB ports (only USB1.0 though), so I'm really looking for the right lead/adaptor/dongle (whatever you call it) to talk to my A6 (C4 platform) and also the wifes mk2 Ibiza (circa '99)

I'm looking for as much functionality as I can get, as I figure it's better having the features and not using them, anyone got any recommendations?

...to be honest, with your cars you should really get the HEX+CAN USB version.

What year is your A6? - you may need the 2x2 adapter

This is the unit i have and it works on XP and Win7 via USB.

I also have it working on my Mac via Parallels.

The A6 is a 96.. Any thoughts on where the diagnostic port is on these?

OK, you will need the 2x2 adapter - this is most likely to be in the fuse box located by the bulkhead.

I think the last 2x2 adapter i got was around £20 from a dealer - although there will probably be cheaper versions on ebay.

Not sure about the Seat, not worked on these cars at all, but i can tell you it does not require the 2x2 adapter.
