Newbie Cdn 80 Owner

Hey there everyone! Just put my 1991 80 2.0E on the road today. I've been learning much about the car for a month, but still have many questions. I'm hoping to hook up with people who can steer me towards an owner's manual and the proper repair guide. Also wish to connect with parts suppliers, although this car is in great shape!

Really love the right hand drive here in Canada! Turns lots of heads, and it's just a lot of fun to drive. Previous owner looked after the car very well.

Please contact me if you can shed some light on the proper identification of the model and specs for this car. I can provide details which may help anyone interested in assisting me.

I'm interested in verifying the proper workshop manual, the best method for obtaining the correct parts, fixes, etc.

I hope the images I'm attempting to post aren't too big...

First, my VIN has a few Zs in it. I'll leave out the last 6 digits which are the chassis serial number: wauzzz8azma******

From what I can tell, the three Zs in positions 4 thru 6 indicate:
Car Line Series A-K
Engine Type
Restraint System

Position 9 is the "Check Digit", which apparently verifies the VIN as authentic. It is also a Z, which is used as a blank or a place-holder. This particular Z has caused a bit of trouble when registering the car here in Canada!

I believe the engine is a 2.0E since the build sticker in the boot (behind the spare wheel) clearly shows it as AAD. Also, it lists the car codes as:
Type BA2 0V4
Audi 80 2.0E
83 kW GKAT 5G (not sure what the last 6 characters mean!).

I'd really like to know for sure what variant of the car I have. Can anyone help?

I believe GKAT stands for Geregelter Katalysator - catalytic converter.

5G = 5 speed gearbox (AXA in fact, with a 39:11 final drive).

Thanks Ian! I knew the AXA meant 5-speed manual, but the GKAT was a mystery.

Any idea what the BA2 0V4 means?

I'm not so sure about this. If I recall correctly, it's in the same place that carried a chassis type identifier for my 1990 90. So, it's probably code letters for '4 cylinder, front wheel drive, 80 chassis'.

Am curious; is it a UK spec model?

There are differences between those in the USA, and those in the UK, and those in Europe.... (although the US ones differ most from all the others)- I ask as it's RHD.....

Places like GSF maybe able to assist with parts, BUT they can be "hit and miss" with regards either the correct part, or the quality (some are OE make/ spec, others definitely aren't)- and with you not being "local" could cause you more aggrevation. For the same reason, I would possibly avoid EuroCarParts (also UK based one)- my own personal experience is that they are worse....

EBay can also be the same sort of thing/ issue- but cheaper Laughing

It was imported from the UK in 2006. I've checked and everything on the net points to it being at least European. The VINs chassis/serial number indicate it was a model built for sale in the UK, so...

The Canadian online parts dealers only sell parts for the North American 5 cylinder version. I'm particularly interested in aftermarket parts. Most of the postage rates from the UK are exorbitant (up to 100 euros).

Hopefully I can find performance parts too. Quite a challenge, I'm finding...

just remember- a LOT of parts from other models fit easily; RHD suggests it's a UK car (only Cyprus in Europe uses RHD other than us, I think, excluding Eire, Isle of Man, Jersey, etc.)

For example bigger brakes- Audi 90 20valve with G60 callipers, etc. (although watch the legs- long story)

Engines- (ultimate bhp increase)- almost anything will fit to the gearbox (fairly standard hell housing)
Body panels- anything from an 80 or 90 saloon should fit- air filters, stainless steel exhaust; suspension, etc- all easily available as upgrades/ aftermarket....

Fairly reliable model, easy to maintain, and not too expensive to run Wink
