Got a banger of an 80 cabrio to do Rust2rome! The ADR was way more common in the A4, hence the post to this forum. It's got 180k on the clock, no seats, no wheels, no steering wheel and fuel lines leaking all over the place.

I have pulled the head off it and have been told by 1 mechanic not to bother skimming it, just throw it back on with a new gasket, as long as I undid the bolts in order it won't warp.

Been told by another "it's aluminium it'll need skimmed", who's right? Anyone had to do a head gasket on one of these engines before?

What was the reason for pulling the head off Andrew? If it was just to check and make sure all the valves and pistons were Ok you should be Ok just bolting it back on with a new gasket and tightening it thru the correct tightening sequence, that's as long as you undid it in the correct sequence in the 1st place, however if it was a gasket problem then Id have it skimmed

If you are worried get yourself a steel set square and a steel rule and you should be able to check the head for any high spots by placing the rule or set square on its edge on the mating surface and checking it thru corner to corner and side to side in various places

Head was pulled because:

Coolant was the same colour as the oil
Steam out the back
Difficult to start
Mileage on the car, assumed the head gasket was gone!

I didn't know the history of the car, I just knew it was cheap and worth a punt! Smile

9 out of 10 times you should be Ok, check it the way I've said, make sure you give the head a good clean down and when you strip the valves, as I take it your going to re-grind them whilst the heads off, have a good check with a magnifying glass to make sure there are no cracks across between the valve seats that could cause your coolant/oil mixing, you could've saved the hassle of stripping it by using this http://www.gsfcarparts.com/981aa1460 and yes it does work
