Hi

I have an A4 Avant 1.9 se TDi 2008 (the 2005 08 range)

I am disappointed in mpg. Official combined is 48 mpg. This is POOR

I do a lot of local and a fortnightly 140 motorway trip.l Overall I only get 44-45 mpg Spending more on special Shell V Power brew fuel at +4.5 per litre it is no better

I had a W reg 2000 Avant 1.9 TDi and
over 98k miles I got overall 55 mpg. Sad

Hi, if the figures you're quoting are correct, you are getting about 25 to the gallon which is very, very poor.

There are a number of factors you need to consider:

1stly, we are now using Winter Diesel which cuts your mpg by about 10%.

2ndly, it depends on your driving style.

3rdly, it depends on how well the car has been looked after and in these times not many people are following the service record and missing services, interestingly a Garage owner friend of mine states where it says service every 20k miles or every 12 months, people are having it done every 20k which for some cars can be 4 years or more and not good!!

4thly, you don't say what mileage the car has on it, if it's been to the Sun and back you wouldn't expect very good mpg.

So, if it's high mileage, been serviced every change of Government and driven like you stole it the mpg is about right, but on the other hand, there could be a problem?

Rgds

When was the car last serviced?

Assuming it needs a service, then renew the oil, and replace the air, oil and fuel filter. Prior to changing the fuel filter, drain it of diesel then fill it with Forte diesel conditioner. The remaining Forte can go in the tank. Run the car in low gears, starting and stopping to get the revs up. It will smoke, but the Forte is the business for cleaning the fuel injectors of any carbon build-up. Avoid this if you're close to renewing the timing belt (every 60k or 4-5 years) on a 4-cylinder diesel. Replace fuel filter afterwards and remember to top it up with fresh diesel prior to starting.

Does the car reach temperature okay? Thermostat should sit back on 90 degrees. Water pump and thermostat should be changed when the timing belt is done.

The pollen filter often gets overlooked during services, so check and replace too. Wink

I had 2 1.9tdi 130's and ran them both with the £25 Ebay power mod that plugs into the fuel temp sensor for years. They both had good performance improvments and fuel saving of at least 10 mpg in one and 20 in the other which was pushing out around 60 MPG on average I photographed it at 77 mpg one day) and that was a 53 plate. 25 sounds like you have an issue regardless of fuel quality.
