Replacing thermostat

After years of the water temp gauge sitting at 90degrees, it has recently been running at about 65-70degrees. I have bought a new thermostat but cannot find where it is located. Can anyone help? The car is an A4 B5 Avant with a 1.8 engine year 2000.

I think you'll find on the n/s under the alternator area.
Dont be surprised if the issue is related to a coolant temperature sensor and not the stat

Thanks Stuart, You were right, it was the sensor. I now have a spre thermostat!
