put that part number I gave you into the search window on the weblink
http://www.partsbase.org/audi/
Fits between the hub and the bearing housing. On some of the illustrations it's not shown but is listed in the parts at the side |

Thanks Mike. I didn't see the search window(should have gone to specsavers lol). It's seems only to be fitted on A6 C5's up to & including 2001 after that the Hub has been changed. pre 2001 - 4A0407615. After 2001 - 4B0407613. Mine being a 2003 so doesn't need it. |

Bearing & Hub replaced. What a difference . No more rumbling noise. Bit of a pain to get the old one off. The 4 (M12 torx) bolts that hold the bearing in. The top 2 were easy to get out, but the bottom 2 looks like the mechanic who replaced it the last time was a little over zealous when doing them up and stripped the heads . Got there in the end though. |

how long are bearings lasting on these cars ?
I'd expect 80-100k from wheel bearings |

I've looked back though my paperwork & found that both bearings(Orbis) were bought back in 2010 from Eurocarparts & a garage fitted them. The mileage then was 139,000. When I replaced the n/s one yesterday the cars on 162,000. So only done 23,000!! With the amount of rust & crud build up on the bearing, also the problems with the 2 lower bolts I have my suspicions that maybe they didn't change it(see photo's below). Or maybe it's just a case due to the state of the roads that a few pothole/drain cover hits caused it to fail early. The jury is out on this one.

Sometimes genuine is the way to go.
Some of the quality of Euro car parts stuff is really poor |
