hi guys I have a dark green audi 80 1.9tdi avant 1993. car interior is very clean, outside I buffed the paint up used very high quality wax's and polishes and she comes up lovely but has the typical age related marks here and there, what do you except from a 22year old workhorse 1.9tdi estate.

since owning it from December 2014 I have spent roughly 200 on brand new all season tyres, 120 on brake discs and pads all round, and a full service in july including air, oil and fuel filters, new oil, new glow plugs, new thermostat and rad switch and most importantly the cambelt changed!
so at just shy of 180,000miles she has plenty of life left in her.

but recently the clutch release bearing has been getting louder and louder when the car is idling. the clutch bite is very very high but has never slipped on me yet! but I think it is time for a new clutch as the bearing is getting worse and worse as the weeks go on.

I am a confident DIY mechanic but have never done a clutch and am reluctant to crawling around on my garage floor. i got a quote from "the cheapest clutch company in Southampton" who said it would cost 375.
i mean im no expert like i said but they would get a clutch kit for 75 trade price so where have they got 300 labour from? a place that specialises in clutches surly would take 2 hours, and even if they took 3 that's 100 an hour labour!!

so im at a cross roads, how easy is the clutch to do yourself? there isn't a step by step guide anywhere from what i have found...

if i were to sell the audi i am looking for 800 ono considering its condition and its great service history and the recent work its had done. everything works as it should except the door interior light sw and the intermittent wiper doesn't work, which are both stupidly easy fixes ive just never bothered ordering a wiper relay and 4 door switches as its never bothered me enough.

or do i fix it myself, but i am certainly not spend anymore then 200 getting this clutch replaced. i would love to keep it as i love driving it, i love the mpg and i love the look of it, its never ever let me down!!

little advice anyone?

2 hours ? not a chance

Gearbox needs removed which is 2-3 hours on its own. Then they've to remove the clutch and swap in the new one and fit the release bearing and re-assemble

Oh really? Christ that long even for a garage having it up on a nice ramp?

Maybe this clutch business is more of a pain in the arse then I thought...

things that need to be undone

car needs to be off the ground - on stands even if it's on a ramp
gear linkage - usually needs the exhaust to be removed
driveshafts
heatshield
bellhousing bolts
gearbox mounts and subframe
slave cylinder
various sensors

I don't know any garage who could complete a clutch swap on one of these in 2 hours
