Why i need a manual? To bake a cake, what else!
Seriously it is really common sense, i have always serviced/repaired my own cars, for twenty five years i drove a Rover P6B and always looked after it myself, i was the technical consultant for the Rover Owners Club Denmark and helped countless people with their problems etc.
So it was natural for me when i bought my Audi to try and find the relevant manuals so i could as far as possible take care of it. I do not think it is very practical to suddenly find myself in a situation where i need information and have to rely completely on others, that will be a last resort. If i can sort out a problem myself, fine if not then i will ask others who hopefully have the relevant knowledge. This will undoubtedly happen as the type of
car i have been used to is from another age, but also designed by another type of mentality. This has shown itself a number of times during the past
months when i have been working on the car and automatically compare the design philosophy behind it in comparison to an English car.
Another highly relevant factor is my former profession, aircraft engineer, this is a major reason for needing a manual, i am used to looking at technical drawings and seeing how things are in relation to each other. Why use a spring washer instead of a split or dished one, why anodise
instead of cadmium plating? These are the kind of thoughts which go through my mind as i explore the beast. Simply put, it feels unnatural for me to be without a manual.
I hope this answers your question.
Julian. |

easy tiger!
Your inital post sound like an immediate need for the infor for something specific. Thus the pictures and what do you need replies. Not doubting your prowess by any stretch, but if there was anything specific it could be answered.
However, problem is that Haynes never released anything for the quattro or V6 in this platform. However Bentley did, but it is costly compared to the Haynes manual which tend to be relatively cheap by comparison.
There is a series of workshop manuals Audi released to Dealerships but they are for dealerships only. If you can read between the lines. I have access to Autodata from time to time, legally though a collegues garage which gives me worksheets/ diagrams when needed. Thus if it was something specific i could post it onwards.
But most jobs have been done by folk here or elsewhere as i am sure you are aware.
VAGcat is great but not sure if they are still posting the diagrams.
Utterly agree on the philosophical design approach, Audi have some bloody odd quirks which are decidedly german. Only natural to think, why thebloody hell did they do that. Although you will find wiht the AAH is that it is by modern standards fairly overbuilt.
As an engine its an early Vee for Audi as the is the sucessor to the hugely popular Inline 5 (and turbo) which in some forms stil exist in Volvos D5 and indeed losely in the focus RS mk2. Some compnents are designed as purposeful weak links in an era when production cost wasnt as much of an issue as it is now. why spring washers? No idea.. but i would be interested to find out.
Every day is a school day imho
25 years in a P6, your not an HRM chaffuer are you?! |

Hi
I was in contact with Erwin last year but all they could offer, if it still existed was on microfiche. Bentley no longer print their manual which
although for the US market model could have been usefull. I bought a CD off E-bay which proved to be pretty poor and recently finally bought
the Haynes manual which of course does´nt cover the AAH engine. I have been collecting various drawings as i come across them on the net
and from the very helpfull members here, which by the way is without doubt the best Audi community i have encountered.
The reason i might have sounded desperate was simply because when i do get a problem i need to sort it asap. I moved from Copenhagen
last year and am now living in the sticks. My nearest neighbours have four legs so am pretty isolated.
I have just registered with VAGcom, will have a good look into it soon.
This morning i bought a crankcase ventilation pipe which was missing, 9 inches of plastic which cost..........53pounds!!!!!!!!!
This is the country in the world with the highest taxation and in import duty on cars of 180%
Not sure what HRM chaffeurs are but it sounds royal, if correct then you are deffinately on the right track, "Her Majesty" is visible in one of my
posted pictures!
All the best, Julian. |

Last year i bought the 2 CD manual set from "Which Manuals" off Ebay, they were a waste of money. Obviously copied from something or other the drawings were absolute rubbish, very basic low res which if enlarged were just pixels. It cost 10 pounds, no big deal but annoying. The links you provided seem to be more convincing, however the one which appeals the most is 25GB on your hard drive and promises the earth, and all for just 3.95!
That is ridiculously cheap and i automatically become suspicious
What would help is if someone here has seen the product and can give an opinion. |

I can provide anybody with ETKA drawings as required, but since these would be on a print screen basic, you'd need to specify what you wanted to know. |

Gripper, as i wrote in a previous message i bought a CD from "Which Manuals", that was also a real pain in the posterior to load but it did function once installed. Just turned out to be waste of time. |

Haynes cover the v6 in the Audi 100/Early A6 book. As you say maybe not the most informative manuals. Does allow servicing and fault finding on these engines |

This is THE ONLY manual that covers the 2.8 v6 found in the 80 range. It is a Haynes manual for the North American market for the '96-'01 Passat and A4. The A4 had the 2.8 (12v) engine in '96, 30v from '97. It covers all procedures for bothe 12v and 30v head versions of the 2.8.

...and yes I have bought one myself, primarily for working on my 2.8 30v that I transplanted into my 80 cabriolet, it also contains the same procedures and usual Haynes step-by-step guides for the earlier 12v engine. It is available on UK eBay as linked above. |

I'm not sure how old this thread is so sorry if I'm reviving.
But was there ever a manual for the ABC engine? I've heard that there wasn't. I can get a Passat manual for 16 quid however which has the AAH which is a similar engine just 2.8 not a 2.6 so I'd assume I could use that. |

Hi Matt, I would think that the general engine description would be fine, just have to make sure that the settings are correct for an Audi.

That's what I was thinking. I'm pretty sure it'll be really similar, I have a 2.6E so it's an ABC engine which has no manuals ever made. |

You can get manuals for the ABC engine - just not Haynes.
try http://erwin.audi.com |
4 Quid Hourly? Wth? They won't even let me confirm if they have the right information. That being said I'd get all of the B3/B4 stuff and S2/RS2 stuff while I'm at it I guess. |

Been a while since I got anything from there but you used to be able to buy paper manuals or download encrypted pdf files |
