Any advice on buying an A2. I am looking at a 51 plate A2 and need to know if this would be a good purchase. It has approx 100k on the clock. How reliable are they?

Not sure if you're still looking for an A2 (given you posted back in April)? The last A2s made (2005) will all be around the 100k mileage mark or over. There are some low mileage examples, but they're few and far between.

Best model is frugal 1.4 TDI (75PS). Easily 60mpg and £35 road tax. There is a 90PS model too, but quite honestly its a light car, aluminium chassis, and should fly if well looked after.

History is everything. I'd be looking for regular 10k oil changes, and timing belt and water-pump done at 60k or 4 years. Avoid open-sky versions unless you want a £3k bill to renew.

Suspension will be tired at 100k, so opt to renew shocks, drop links and top mounts for better handling. Sheared coil springs are common as the top mount bearing seizes plus pot holes don't help.

Other regular faults at this age will include worn door straps (tell-tale click), worn EGR valve rubber bushes (tell-tale 'moo' sound), worn wiper mount, air con button wear, etc.

Go for proper 4 seat model, not bench seat in rear. Leather is a plus if you can find one.

Good luck. Very Happy

I like the A2's. They are all high mileage now as production stopped as Sparta said but if they're well taken care of, go for it!

Hi all

Bumping this up, looking for something really good on fuel for commuting, fancied an Audi so have wondered about an A2. Are there many pitfalls with them and what sort of money are they fetching? Diesel or petrol?

Cheers

Personally I'd avoid the petrol engined A2s. These are old cars now. Last models were 2005. The 1.4 TDI will do around 60+ mpg. Fairly bomb proof, just renew engine oil and filter every 10k miles and fuel filter every 40k miles.

They're expensive to repair (aluminium bodywork), but plenty good examples on the market that have been lovingly cared for.

Expect to pay £2k for something with 130k miles. Only £35 road tax... it's a bargain. Very Happy

Cheers Spartacus. So diesel is the one to get, yes the cheap fuel and road tax is very much of interest Very Happy Not long rebuilt a V8 range rover classic but 300 miles a week at 25mpg isnt quite what I had intended it to be used for Laughing

There are three diesel engines in the range, 1.2 TDI, 1.4 TDI (75bhp) and 1.4 TDI (90bhp). The 1.2 unit was for the continent only, and not available in the UK. More the pity as it was well ahead of its time, aluminium block and possible 95mpg and 81g/km CO2.

The 1.4 TDI unit is tried and tested. No issues with gearboxes as long as you opt to renew gear oil if you're planning on keeping it. There was even a rebuild 6th gear. More details here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN7nVOtdDzY

No experience of 90bhp version. Would expect it to be thirstiest, and extra power is wasted as the A2 can't be driven hard as the suspension if standard simply isn't up to the job.

Avoid models with rear bench seat, and try to get half leather and cruise. Very Happy

Laughing at V8 Range Rover. Nice cars, but not enough to visit petrol stations on a regular basis.

Might have to revise the price I gave you. I looked on Autotrader tonight and cars are still selling for £3,500 and up. Not bad for a 2002-2005 car with over 100k miles! Shocked

Just seen your location I'll be travelling from Lanark to Aberdeen hence the need for the cheap car!

1.2TDI..... 95 to the gallon thats actually tempting! Dunno what the import scene is like probably not worth it.

Yes they are still getting a fair amount of money for their age, have also had the Fabia 1.9tdi suggested as a ultra cheap runabout too.

Will keep looking!

Couple of cars in Scotland. This one is in Ayrshire. Nice colour and low miles:

This one is in Dundee: http://www.metromotors.co.uk/?source=autotrader-desktop

I bought a Fabia recently for commuting as my A4 quattro was racking up the miles. It's the 1.6 TDI (105), but fuel consumption isn't as good as I'd imagined. Manages 50-60mpg a-class road driving returning 530 miles for £48 of diesel. Only positive is road tax is cheaper than A2 at £20.

What's wrong with the bench seat? Gets more mates in the back as it's a 5-seater.

Yes rear bench seat will take three people, but the bench seat looks inadequate comfort wise for journeys. The two rear seats are properly upholstered, plus they lever forward so the back seats can lie flat if you're carrying loads.

So do you have to load large items onto the rear seats that are laying flat?

After researching the options I purposely sourced the rarer 5-seater and I find our leather upholstered bench seat is very comfortable even on long journeys. The entire unit folds and flips forward to increase the boot space for large loads. Recently got a large dining table (legs attached) and 4 chairs in it! Could hardly believe it myself! Shocked

Don't get me wrong. If you bought an A2 I'm delighted. They're completely under-rated. The 1.4 TDI will do 60+ mpg, £30 road tax and will never rust. What's not to love?

No worries Spartacus,
Yeah tell me about it! Such clever cars and I'm surprised they ceased making them but I suppose they were expensive for their Class at the time. We managed to find a great example at a steal of a price about 7 years ago - simply because the seller advertised a few broken switches in the ebay advert that put all the other bidders off at the time. £50 and a trip to the main stealer soon sorted those out. Just a shame it wasn't also a diesel. Rolling Eyes
All the best.
