Good morning. I think the thermostat on my 58 A3 1.8 TFSI with 31k may be sticking open. I may be wrong but it seems to take a long time for the temp to get up to 90 degrees but once there it stays put. When I'm saying a long time, about 4 miles of which 3 miles are mainly at 30mph and the last mile is on open road when it gets up to temp. I know the weather is still cool and I haven't had the car very long but my last car a Volvo was almost up to temperature within a mile but I put this down to it being from Sweden where the Winters are long and cold. I have VAGCOM but wondered if someone could tell me how to use it to check the thermostat please? Also I have read that replacing the thermostat on an A3 is a pain but can't find any specific reference to the 1.8TFSI engine. I'm sure someone here must have replaced a stat on this engine so any help would be appreciated. Thanks very much. Steve

Hi,

4 miles seems about right. I would doubt that your thermostat has gone in that short period of time. Not sure on your model, but I just replaced the one on my 2002 A4 TDi and that managed 122,000. That was a wax cartridge thermostat, so entirely mechanical, and diagnostics won't pick up a fault on that. That was virtually closed and the engine was running hot. You could do a Sunday roast with the heater, but the radiator was cool. Only very rarely deviated from 90 degrees though!

I'd wait until the winter, and revisit then to see whether you're getting a problem heating up.

Regards,

Pete
