Hi, just wondering if anyone knows if an A4 1.8 engine (with its own engine mounts)! will fit straight into the cab engine bay?
It looks like the 1.8 cab engine bay is the same as the v6 one, is this the case?

Only wondering because it would(or will) be easier to sit an a4 tdi engine (4 or 6 cyl) into the space using a4 engine mounts rather than take off the mounts that are there and weld in 80 tdi ones!
Just asking Wink

think I may have replied to your thread on another forum? I have got a 1.8 engine sitting on the ground at the farm and got 2.6 engines and mounts also. Im going there tomo so will see if the mounts look the same. Unfortunately I have already sent the shells to the scrappy. Im pretty sure 1.8 and V6 engines mount in the same way. you undo 3 bolts from the wheel arch area!!!

I've asked the wrong question!!
It should be "Do engines from 80s with battery bays at the bulkhead fit into 80s with the battery tray at the nearside front?"

It's just because they use a different mounting system...but I would like to know if they sit in the same place, so all engines could fit onto the mounts!

If it's a B5, the 1.8 20v is the exact same as went into the late B4 Cabrios - the ADR...

Attached is a shot of the engine bay from the one I was working on a few months back (long sold).

As you can see there's the battery tray at the top right of the pic on the inner arch, same place as the v6's.

There was a TDi version of the cabrio back in the day, wasn't sold in the UK, but might be worth looking at the mounting setup for that, not sure about the diesels myself, was always a petrol fan Very Happy

Also decided that the v6's were too heavy on these, I suspect the best engine swap for a cabrio to keep the front light would be a 1.8 20v Turbo.

Actually just re-read your question. I think the battery tray was probably moved to the front of the bay to avoid the MASSIVE inlet manifold on the 1.8 20v. The old 1.8 8v's had battery trays on the bulkhead.
