A small list of questions

My girlfriend has a 1996 A3 1.6 8v with less than 90,000 miles on the clock and it has a few problems that I want to try and address. Originally we were going to sell it on as it stands but I think it could be a good car if the issues are resolved.

The main bug bears are the idle hunts, the fuel economy is dire and it doesnt always start well, sometimes when it starts the starter screams after the engine starts.

I am no stranger to spanering, I just dont know this car at all! I serviced it a few months back when I found out she had never done this before, but it hasnt helped (oil, filter, air filter, plugs)

Can anyone offer any advise on the issues - is there any other information that might help?
