Well thought i would put together alttle thread to cover the start of my new project
First Coupe i have ever owned so really going to enjoy building it up
Well picked her up on Tuesday
Needing a good bit of work done to get her back to scratch
Problems as they are now head noise very loud clattering and basicilly running like crap..paint work is pinkish and interior needs good clean
Have been lucky in the previous owner has thrown some money at it
It has :
280 remap
full samco hosing
RS2 Airbox
Decatted S/S system
New head gasket and belts
Polybushes and Anti roll bar new bushes
Today dealt with the engine
Stripped off cams and lifters
Replace the lifters and gave everything a good clean down
When taking apart came across a few issues...Timing was out by 2 teeth on the belt
Hall sender wiring was shot
Replaced this with a new plug and wired it back to the loom
Vacuum hose to the Dump valve was screwed to replaced that and the oil breather hose that goes to the cam cover was perished fixed this to
After this was done i rebulit the cams and timed it up
I had to play about with the dizzy to make sure it was spot on ..check this out 3B owners a spanner on the dizzy bolt!!
Finished putting together and started her up on the first turn and she is running smooth as !!...I had a dance to myself after this
She is needing MOT so that will be the next thing on the list ..this will be brake overall were i will put on the monster 4's
Going to fit ABY IC and cross member tomorrow and give her a good clean ..more pic's to follow |

Well had a look over her last night and took her for a spin down a country lane ....She is fast !!
Some more things added to the list Rear diff mounts sound like they are knocking as when i move forward i get this knocking from the rear..or prop mount ?
The main beam stay's on, keys out of the ignition and all..but the rear are off?..Thinking some to do with switch here
HAd a go at the paint work but will need to get the paint guru's to help me on this one ..Tried some T-cut to see if it would take the pink away but did not work at all....HAve had a look to see what i need but lots of thoughts out there ...was thinking about a paint cleaner ?..then try and see if it can be buffed up ..If anyone has links for stuff to do this it would be appreciated..going to invest in a PC so need to know what pads i need to
At work now but will load more pics later of progress |

I used Farecla G10 to clean my paint up (off ebay) then Autoglym Supreme then Collinite 476S
Farecla also worked well on Mike's Ur |

cant really go wrong with farecla or 3m really the G10 is good but if your going to mop and polish it i would use the farecla total (the dry step unless you want to be cleaning your car forever doing it wet is very massy ) its not the cheapest around £25 for a litre but will do a full car. you should be able to get this and the pads from a local paint factors. and one last thing watch your edges (bonnets doors etc) very easy to build heat up in these areas and then burning through comes very quickly after that use an edging tape (or masking tape) on the edges if your not very confident to start off with. |

The Porter Cable is 110v yes, so need a transformer.
No fear though, Meguiars have their version out now and it runs at 240v.
The beauty of a random orbital is the reduced risk of heat damage and burn through for us mere hobbyists.
I prefer a 3" backing plate and one cutting and one finishing pad for first time paint correction. Larger pads tend to take longer to do the job, thought they are very good for glaze, sealant and wax application.
The Menzerna stuff is great. You don't need water, so no mess and the IP works very well. The FF just finishes everything off down to a silky smooth glossy finish.
You'll be better off getting some clay lube and a clay bar before doing any polishing. It gets rid of all the stuck on crap and leaves the paint like glass. Meguiars clay bar comes with lube and will do a full car no problem. Available in most Halfords, and ebay etc.
Polisher available on ebay for the same money as megs themselves or in the link below too. For pads, I like lake country gear and also the menzerna polish available through >>> Polished Bliss They are based in Scotland too
For protection once polished, you just can't beat Collinite 476s wax. Brilliant shine and will 100% tried and tested last for over 6 months. Collinite available on ebay.
EricD likes Jeffs Werkstat gear, but I've yet to try it.

Well found some G3 tonight so thought i would see if it would make a difference to the paint work
Few more pics of the paint and how bad it is
HAve my hands full with the Sunroof...last fix for the leak i presume was to fill with sealer and shut it let it set and never use it again
On a very good note Mike(audibits)Is bringing up a bonnet .2 wings, sunroof and diff mounts on Sunday all the same colour as the car |

headlining out job....... some were glued, some not.... then the whole lot comes out as a full assembly iirc.... not quite a major job as it may sound as long as you take your time..... inever took the full assembly out of mine but did have the headlining out and decided to clean it at the time which in hindsight was a bad move because late after a couple of months the material started to pull away from the moulded lining |

Hi Steve
Got your letter - that is indeed my old car!!
I've had 5 cars since I sold it in 2001 and to be honest I don't remember too much other than I was always spending on it to keep it running. All the mods (including the sunroof!) were definitely done by the guy I sold it to as I think you'd already guessed.
The one thing I remember never getting to the bottom of was occassionally when gunning along it momentarily lost all power which was occassionally a bit embarassing / dangerous in the middle of an overtaking manouvre!!
Looks to have suffered a little but glad to see it's clearly in good hands now.
Look forward to watching your progress - good luck with the restore!!

I think I had it serviced at Audi once but wasn't too impressed and so found a decent independent specialist.
The issue with the power was intermittent and happened momentarily when you floored it - but its quite probably been fixed in the last 7 years!!
FYI...I had it from Dec 1998 to April 2001 if I recall correctly, which is quite a long time for me to keep a car actually!! Replaced it with a Golf MkIV V6 4 Motion - what a pile of cr@p that was.
Cheers

Cheers Paul always good to know back ground of the car
Quick update on how i am getting on ..Have received the body panels i have been waiting for so they will be going on this weekend ...I have had another coupe to strip so i am now stocked up on spare parts from lights to relays..nuts bolts so on
HAve had an electrical issue which i have located at the fuse box..lucky for me i have just checked and the one off the other coupe has the same relay/fuse plate so this will be getting changed over(fun and games)..pics to follow on this one(going to use digi camera to memorise all the plugs for each relay )
Hopefully will have Eric up on Monday to help with paint work so the car will be looking a bit tidier
HAve a homer on this weekend to so going to be like S2 mini meet (timing belt and samco hosing) |

Well got a good bit done today
First problem was the fusebox getting changed over ...problems it was causing lights staying on battery drain and burning up..:bonk:
So changed it over as you can see quite a few wires to remember
Was changing the bonnet so had that out the road and took off the plastic trim beside the wipers
leaving me this
2 clips at the side and she pops up
had another relay/fuse plate so had enough room just to swap over in situ
installed just putting in new fuses
As you can see water has got in to the fusebox and caused this..remeber people dont stick the cover on properly this is what will happen after heavy rain
After doing this i had to change the VR as the lights were pulsing when the engine was on (basicilly not regulation via VR was charging at 16v)
As you can see the VR is rusted up to
So busy day as i changed swing arm on the Avant to and finished off dm80 motor(timing belt and samco hosing)

Steve,
I have had this problem before on mine, can be very very elusive, too much too explain now BUT if it comes back give me a shout.
I will watch this thread with interest ! Look good so far
Good on yer.
