The switch can be pulled from the front and can be stripped apart if need be.
Graphite grease is the norm for all types of key holes.
I think Jas knows how to reset the tumblers in lock barrels so you could use your original key in the ignition.

UPDATE
Clutch::
New clutch was bought and sourced from GSF. Had for £140+VAT that includes a discount from the Audi Owners Club, that alone pays the membership. and given how much i am likely to pay this year on the car i will save an utter fortune!

Ignition:
Jas11n has very kindly offered to help with my ignition barrel to get the keys matching rather than different keys all round.

Wheels/tyres:
probably in the worst condition are the standard 15in wheels. I have also picked up a set of TSW Hockenhiem 17" wheels for a good price so I hope that will sharpen up the handling a bit as the rear offside is borderline legal.

Drivers Door lock:
Also a door lock missing link care of MikeS2, once again AOC coming into play to help. one small section is preventing the door from working a few hours work for someone of my ineptitude!

Spares:
I have a whole car for spares now which i collect on Thursday which will reside at my parents until I have plundered as much as possible off it.

Steering Wheel
Now I have a 3 spoke wheel which i bought from NJ to go on as soon as we get the ignition going.

Front Wings:
The spare car has good front wings, wrong colour though but i will plunder these for my 90, and get them resprayed, hopefully care of Gompa... once i get them off!

That should be a few more off the list, next will be the fault code reader get it working and find out which knocksensor is runnign amock and get that replaced.
Then the tubular manifold on which i believe is a right PITA to do?

Getting there, so looking forward to getting my car back!

just started a spreadsheet for this car and a proejct, passworded of course to ensure wife NEVER sees it!

But, other than Maplin (blink code reader) all the help/spares and parts I have obtained for this car have come through Audifansr via Audi Owners Club discounts, without which this wouldnt be a project!

The annual membership I renewed last month, and it paid for itself with the clutch purchase alone.

I have the spares car now, which i need to strip wings off and get them sprayed, again hopefully within Audifans!

Next immediate purchase will be a roof rack so i can get my bike on the top.

UPDATE.. SHE IS HOME!

items fixed/changed
-New LuK clutch fitted
-Ignition barrel replaced with spare SH one
-3 spoke steering wheel fitted
-Spare 17in alloys (painted white) fitted with Kuhmo Ecsta sport tyres.
-remove stickers on windows and daft mobile aerial from back window.
-fit philips power bulbs

Weekend jobs,pending weather/time/bike/DIY/family commitments.
-Bloody good clean!
-Drivers door lock replace/fix.
-read fault codes (find blink code reader/ build another)
-buy bentley manuals (pending possible AOC discount.. cough (audioc!)

The 90 suits larger wheels well and the decision to spray the spare set white has proven fairly sucessful. Did on a whim, was picking paint of the old ones, in one of those, oh what have i started jobs. Sadly the front wings have deteriorated a lot whilst the car has been sitting for the last month. I have my spares sourced and aiming to have these replaced ASAP. I may touch up with L90E alpine white from local spray place. Just to keep the rust off, like a sore thumb on a white car.

Hoping the blink code reader will reveal a faulty knock sensor which will be replaced immediately. And get rid of the intermittent acceleration.

Coming month/s
-roof rack
-good set of wheels/refurb speedlines.
-visit to nogsport Smile details to be revealed shortly!

i have my old speedlines looking sorry. not sure what to do with these.

yeah even after driving the bimmer for a month or so its refreshing and has its charm for me. Will get some pictures, if the monsoon doesnt happen!

sorry out of action all weekend, got enough time to clean the car, fix the glove box (which kept opening), the trim below it which was hanging off. Removed the mobile phone holder from the interior, left 4 holes. but better than the halford ugly thing that was on it. Remove the redundant immobilizer fob. piece on the dash..

Cant fine the blink coder reader for love nor money. trip to maplins, 60 miles, remember i live MILES from anywhere.

Other than the bloody front rusty wings it cleans up well. And white is a royal PITA to clean. i went round with scratch x and some tar removed for what felt like hours removing all the wee blobs of tar/ muck/ some bit of red paint from somewhere? But paid off, i will do this again shortly, then claybar it and polish and seal with collinite. But kind of tempted to hold off until the wings are done.





and the bad bit...

These are non OEM wings, or so it states on the invoice for the work which was done in 2003. even with the jet wash held 2 ft away it started removing paint. These are very thing and there appears to be no primer!

Running wise the intermittent power delivery has got worse. some cases struggle to hold 5th up a hill at 50, but once above 5000rpm shoots off like a bullet. Blink codes next.

for something nearly 20 years old its amazing what a little bit of soapy water and a vacuum have done... even the missus is now warming to it!

the wheels now show off the rusty callipers. I will stick with the black and white theme I think, and paint them with black heat resistant paint.

edit: Audioc, yeah the new cars are very good but i dont have that attachment with them. This one is good but it still needs to be running right, i want to get eh exhaust/manifold done as i want that noise a lot more! The sound on song is just sublime, you dont want to change just to listen to the intoxicating howl. i reckon iwt hte engine running right, the exhaust tweaked and the suspension updated it will be one very good car. my only criticism is the lack of storage space, ie no folding seats/ bike in car issue.

after loads of arranging/ faffing and buggering about i eventually got a date to go down to Nogsport, during this time the exhaust started to blow and the performance and economy was dropping off the map. Like 260miles from a tank if trundling along with terrible sound. I limped off down to Nogsport at 0430 am on Saturday morning. Impressive given i was up half the night with the baby.

I had my spare wings loaded in the back seats to drop of at Gompas place in Carlisle. He wasn't about as he was off to Le Mans to watch cars and get pissed, good idea really! I also packed the tubular manifold as well, as I am too incompetent to fit it. Although I did forget to take the lock pieces I got from MikeS2. Arrived in Carlisle at 0830 and drove about a bit (lost) then found Gompas place and dropped off the wings eventually about 0930. In a rush to get moving the fuel light came on as i hit the M74/M6. So some hyper milling a few feet behind a lorry took me 29 miles to Tebay services. Was really concerned i was going to run out of fuel! Refill, coffee, breakfast and a text to Nogin with an ETA around 12 I set off again.

Fairly uneventful drive to Warrington, a fair amount of traffic I arrived in Warrington at the back of 12 after only one detour this time. Greeted Nogin, yawned a lot had a natter and put the car in place. Over the course of the next two hours, more and more AOC/ forum members appeared there must have been a dozen by mid afternoon. it was nuts!

We worked out a plan of action, my list was enormous, my plan just to get the poor running fixed, suspension we would leave to another time. And if possible get the tubular manifold fitted. I was just to excited at the propsect of the car getting a major overhaul, was like a kid I a sweetie shop! So a before picture.


Eric began stripping bits off, anything shiny would be grabbed by Bez the Magpie and he began polishing everything. I think he has a metal bling compulsive disorder for sure! But he did a sterling job on the headers, rocker cover and heat shield. The header with just a mild copper wheel really brought a shine back to 19 years of grime.


As Eric stripped thing back i made sure i asked loads of questions, generally along the lines of what that, what does it do. This was a big school day for me, wanted to learn as much as possible. The wire to the lambda was touching the cast manifold, not so good so we decided to replace. the lambda with the Tubular manifold didn't look too hot. so I bought Erics new one from him. Removed the injectors and leads to get the rocker cover off and have a look inside.
pretty clean after 2 decades.

getting all the bolts off cast manifold was going OK until the last bloody one snapped. Remoing the cast manifold also revealled a fairly substantial crack along the underside, not hairline possibly wider!


We covered most things up by this point as it was around 2100. Sue, nogsports PA, had been doing a sterling job all day of providing tea/ bacon sarnies which was just wonderful. Then arrived with a big plate of chips, sweet and sour sauce.. lovely. Washed down with some fine vino as Eric and I got tanked into quite a few bottles of wine... All sat and chatted in the garage until the wee hours it was good crack.

Up again next day for round two, feeling a bit crap. I think we tanned 5 bottles of wine between us. But that didn't stop Eric getting up and out for 0730 to work on the car again. Commendable effort! The duff stud was drilled out. We opted to gum it up and re-address that on a next visit when time isn't an issue. I was keen to get up the road as not to piss off missus istoo too much. It went on fairly well i believe.

Shame these are hidden as they are just a work of art, seriously one of the finest crafted parts of this engine is hidden in the bowels. Like Medusas head hanging out the side of the block, looked menacing!

I in my foolishness decided i was ready to "fix" something so set about the door locks. Using one of Erics spare door locks to fix my small broken segment (as i forgot to take the spares from mikes2) so stripped back the door for the second time (much quicker the second time) with some help from d-a-n as he was chief door holder. The section repaired perfectly. However the locking sequence started to go a bit pear shaped, then eventually we had no locking what so ever. Megsy saved me within about 5 minutes of probing... the door not me before you jump to conclusions! And we were back on track. so i was guided into replacing the Central Locking pump in the boot and that was a much more positive result. finally to sort the drivers door lock, i got it locking but it wouldnt open eventually transpired there are two different locks for these. A simple dog bone and another with a ratchet around the edge. i needed the ratchet variety and of course the spare from Eric was the other one. sods bloody law! So i quite whilst ahead and just rebuilt the door with help from Gmo this time we got it fitting nice and flush. but i got pretty burnt in the process!

When i returned to Eric he was working on the exhaust which was holed, binned the old clamp and fitted a new one. some welding grinding and hitting of things. With that addressed he reconnected everything up top and did some weight saving, ie remove brackets not required. It was 1800 by now and i was anxious to get home, Eric went for his special cleaner. And Si sprung to life like rolf harris with his brush cleaning the engine bay. I didn't want to get in his way, was like a man possessed! Note i wasnt complaining either! The results are frankly stunning.


So we took it for a spin. initially for me it sounded GREAT, the tubular really opens up the noise and there is notably more pull from low revs. But never felt quite right, i could see the look of disappointment on Nogins face, that alone speaks volumes. So we headed back, first off the exhaust was pissing him off so he rectified that straight away, and then went sequentially through the engine as he was asking questions.

Surgery consultancy had begun, can see the way his mind was ticking away it was great. With the engine, myself, Gmo and NineNails looking on he ran his hand over the dizzy, CLACK hand recoiled rapido with "oh dear" or words to that effect. The knowledgeable folk (everyone but me) all said "short". But which leads was it? Nogin knew he had to do it again to find out, so went over them one at a time then CLACK, zapped again, two HT leads got hoofed out and replaced. Bonnet down and away again Nogin went, returned again looking even more pissed off. It still not happy, the clock was ticking for me, i had to be home minus 3 hours ago.

Sequentially talking through potential issues, re replaced the resistor pack and that was all we had time for as the clock was now at 2100 I really had to go with a 385mile trip to make home again. Nogin treated me to a run in his baby before i left. I never said much, that was a good thing. I just adore this car, its not bling at all, but its so well set-up. The ride is comfy, the handling is utterly spot on, and the oomph fro the engine really makes your eyebrows rise. Its got a serious amount of welly for an NA engine. I have been in some quick very quick NA cars and this would give them a serious run for the money. Inspired, i said my good byes to all the remaining crew and headed off.

But after a few minutes the change i the car was very evident. it pulls a hell of a lot better from very low down. 2nd gear take offs are really easy, and it now has that five pot burble all the way through the revs, very nice. The exhaust was quiet as a mouse. The delivery was a hell of a lot smoother, more than it has been in my ownership. After 5 minutes i gave it some beans off the lights, yeah, that sounds bloody awesome, and it picked up fairly well but was a bit intermittent on the top end. I did get to flawless runs and two lumpyt ones but its a lot better and oh so nearly there. But its a huge improvement over the way it arrived. On the way home she was very civilised, pulling cleanly on the motorway with ease and burbling away at low revs. I can feel the potential there, and this has lifted my optimism for getting this project done.

Nogin was visibly frustrated as i had to go and the car wasn't 100%, that alone speaks volumes. I will be back, no shadow of a doubt. Great people, great weekend and you can really see how much he enjoys doing this. We all want people people who take price in their work to work for us. Nogin is one of those rare breed.

I told you this would be a long post. I travelled 762 miles to visit Nogsport, it was worth every penny. Not just that, without the Audi Owners Club i wouldn't have had any of this, is this an advert for the club? Hell yeah!

i think nogin was more disappointed than me to be honest! but time was against us, i was already on borrowed time. One of those moment, 10 more minutes might have solved it, but it could have been 4 hours, who knows!

However its definitely better, still top end lumpy but its nice to feel the small improvement over the course of the weekend each time i step behind the wheel. Better though i am angling to get down with the car and drop off as i go on holiday, a bit skint atm with big hols coming up but i might eat into savings for this as otherwise i will be into august before i can make it again.

knock sensors i went to assess on Wednesday, first time i had been home before midnight. And went down to have a look but my mechanic pal had shuffled everything around when doing the ignition barrel. i will reassemble to i have the contact points again. Cant see me getting much chance to be honest, my sidekick is off on holiday and i am out the door with work. so it will have to wait a while.

the manifold crack surprised me, it is actually fairly wide. As for ticking i am not sure it made so many bad noises previously it would be hard to tell!

Lock is my next one, i know EXACTLY what to do there, only as I have taken the door apart about half a dozen times in the past month!!! But putting the door card on right is really a two man job as d-a-n and i established!!

update:

firstly apologies to cq20v, forgot all about the article until i read this again. I WILL do it but not in he frame of mind right now.

stripped bits of my spare car last week, much easier to figure it out after watching Nogin do the same a few weeks ago, months now actually!

So i went to use the piece Mike left for me but sods law it didn't match in as there was something else, not sure what, missing. At Nogsports last time we noted the 80 doors were different to he 90. The 90 has an assembly on the rear of the lock which looks like its for a heated lock (Ninenails) suggestion which i believe is correct, although there is no loom for this? I declined Nogins offer of a spare lock there and then and decided to use Mikes piece. Which doesnt fit in. So last resort was to strip the innards of the 90q20v i have at my folks. Anw surprise surprise its different again!

The 90 sports i think have completely different locks to the rest of the cars, the observant will notice the handles are colour coded to the car on t he sports, and thus are metal and not plastic as the 90 ones appear to be. The locks on the exterior look identical but inside... totally different! I committed to using he black lock from the spare 90q20v and it proved a nightmare, the door card must have been off a dozen times. BUT it works now.. eventually.





Since my nogsport visit i was beginning to see the small improvements but we ran out of time and i could see the look of woe on Nogins face. The 90 has really started to loose its top end power completely and almost pogos at low speed. So i have just been trundling back and forth to work and averaging 28-29mpg gettign 350 +/- 30miles out of a tank which is not bad going. But come the need to plant to foot nothing...

I reassembled the diagnostics port in the footwell, but i have built three fault code readers and none work, so thats a mystery as well.

MOT it passed i needed 2 new rear drop links, care of quattro corner that was done. They were £30/each. Still cheaper than the £56/ea from Audi UK. And a cautionary on the front right spring which is on the way out. And sport springs which this has are dear, quoted £240. so gulped at that one and pondered the cars future.

As it stands now, i need it to work, which means i need to give it to Nogin. Winter is coming to my part of the world soon and the BMW will be USELESS then so the 90 needs to be operational. Gompa has two front wings which he is lovingly refurbing/ painting so i will hopefully collect these enroute to Warrington next weekend. So this is the key point in time, is it worth fixing? With my skill level, finances and local garages here.. no.

BUT, with the support of the club, knowledgable and skilled people this could be saved. I just hope its not terminal, normally i would have given up long ago on this car but knowing there is a Nogin means its probably going to stay on the road. No pressure!

edit:
worst case scenario the car shell is knackered, but i am hoping the engine will be the crowning glory. if it becomes salvageable for another project then so be it, will pick a good shell next time.

Speak to Peter at Stirling Audi for springs

My 80 locks have an electrical attachment but it's for the alarm and not heated locks (as I first thought).Maybe the ones you mention are the same?

Glad you got that epic handle/lock saga out the way!
I'm going to be biased in my opinion here coz I really love the 90 Sport q So I think ANY 90 Sport is worth keeping hold of, especially the quattro version. Once the shiny new wings are on & Eric sorts the engine you'll LOVE it, I'm sure Wink
They must be getting quite rare now I reckon too..
