Just picked this up from Oliver today and drove her 230 miles from York up to Stirling.

Its a 1992 audi 80 2.0 16v quattro.

Car drove home ok, it needs a front wheel balanced and the exhaust welded somewhere possibly a couple of bushes and probably strut top mounts Rolling Eyes

This is the pile of bits that I got with the car (thanks oliver)
A spare head, intake manifold (with injectors and sensors), an exhaust manifold, heat shield, a set of VDO guages/console, set of wheels, instrument cluster and some more parts I have missed

and tidly put in the garage

Gave the car a quick wash and

Car currently has a zender rear spoiler which appears to have been glued on Confused

Anybody know anything about these wheels?

They look ok, could just do with a refurb when I have some free time. I have to say 80s have HUGE sidewalls with 15s, looks like tractor tyres.

It needs

the afore mentioned exhaust sorted
wheel balanced
headlight bulb
tailight bulb

I am going to work my way through those (hopefully easily)

and then

cam belt
change oil/filter
change fuel filter
change plugs
check distributor/rotor
check for vac leaks Rolling Eyes
check bushes/general underbody/brakes etc
fit vdos
fit 3 spoke steering wheel, the current four spoke is so awful after using a three spoke
change various dash bulbs
wash/polish car properly
refurb wheels
sort fuel guage

I dont really like the interior in the car, I would prefer a black scripted interior so I am going to keep my eyes out round the breakers. Also watch out for a set of g60s and some forged arms for if/when I start to rebush the car as it needs it.

Anyway I will just take it as it comes and enjoy it. There is plenty of inspiration for good progress for threads on here.

Couple of questions I still have a brand new fuel filter, oil filter, and timing belt for my 90 20v quattro, are any of those any use?

Hope some of that is interesting to somebody, I will try to take piks as I go along.

Andrew

No they're not the stock 6 spoke fake split rim speedlines. I have seen them before though, think they were optional on some Audi sport models. I'll check back through the brochures I have.

Thanks I was wondering where they came from, any info would be great. I have been trawling through your project thread, the car looks fantastic, an inspiration to get polishing/painting/spending money I dont have Laughing

Had a poke about the engine bay today, took off the upper cam belt cover as clips were broken and it was dragging on the belt (my 20v was like that too). Whilst I was there I found two plugs hanging about, should these be plugged into anything?

First plug, on right side of engine as you face the front of the car

Second plug, at rear of engine

I am not lucky enough to have the loom for the auxiliary VDO guages or anything as good as that am I?

Done a bit of driving in the car today, the baffles are loose in the exhaust as well, so rattlingbuzzing at certian rpms so will need sorting, can they be bashed out or made to shut up?

Engine is so different to the five cylinder, feels a lot less torquey. Its a lot more free reving. There is no big fat dollop of power like the 5 cylinder gave mid range, you really have to rev this, that said it takes off quite nicely after about 5K up to 7K. Should go pretty well if allowed to breath
Twisted Evil Still its fun to drive, should be able to suprise a few things.

Also stuck my head under the car, exhaust looks ok, there are just a couple of joins that resemble hen shit, should be sortable.

Plug 1 is *Insert expletive as Oliver has forgotten* something that is totally unnecessary, from memory a sensor of some kind not fitted to this engine when I dug around for it.

Plug 2 (blue) is cold start injector. When plugged in it starts awfully, when unplugged it starts really easily. Go figure!

The welding on the exhaust is a classic isn't it! Did warn you! Whoever did that wants shooting, got to be worth a pic at some point.

Ok thanks for that quick reply.

Will try and remember to take a photo of the welds when I get the car in the car, will give everyone a good laugh.

Just to help you out fitting the gauges, the actual gauges have a legend on the rear showing which terminal does what. Makes connecting them up much easier!

Well on titan the hot start issue was almost entirely solved by diconnecting the cold start valve, suggesting he wasnt starting due to massive over fueling, indeed the only way it would start when it was hot and playing up was to give lots of throttle allowing more air in to make the mixture up.

I suspect all thats up with titans hot/cold start system is whichever temp sender controls the cold start system is duff and even when hot tells the cold start injector to open up for a few seconds, Andy has a full set of senders in the "boot of parts" so if anyone knows which one it is it might help him out.

Jims problem I don't know, but if it isn't overfueling it shouts out air leak as that is the cause of a lot of problems with K-Jet based systems, I've spent most of my life working on K-jets and they are very very good from a reliability point of view, but almost all have a hot/cold start issue or both.

Mike- look like fake bolts but will see when I take the wheels of the car. Under the centre caps there is no name, just 15 7j et30.

Took the spoiler off today, it was bolted on the outer legs and glued on the middle, was left with this

after a quick clean

This is on the bottom of the spoiler

Spoiler off (my dad also gave the rear quarter a polish, looks like the car will come up pretty well with a bit of work)

I need to decide what I am going to do with the boot, 80 spoiler, 90 spoiler? no spoiler? I doubt I will respray the zender spoiler, dont really like the way it looks.

Ordered strut top mounts and a front snubber mount from audi.

Get hold of the Aluminium 2 post spoiler, I find this more pleasing to the eye and it's OE Wink

Oliver-car looks so much better with it off

rotoryboy-that looks good, probably what I will go for.

On another note where is the engine code on these engines?

A 90 spoiler wouldn't fit anyway Wink
Good choice on the two post, looks a lot better than the three and MILES better than that Zender.

Engine code;

They are located (as you stand facing the front of the car) in the rear left of the engine bay down near the driveshaft and exhaust. I havnt had a chance to get under the car yet, work and uni have been akward at the moment.

Anybody know what they are and what they should be doing, sorry if the picture is not much use.

Dont know, cant fit my hand down to feel, cant see and unfortunately dont have time to get the car up in the air.

As soon as I get some proper free time car is going up in the air to get examined properly, check all bushes/lines etc.

Just saw them today, they look fairly substansial and therefore like they should be doing something.

Just if anybody knew what they were?

The only bolts I've seen on an Audi that look similar are for ancilliaries such as power steering pump etc. I wonder if when it's had a new alternator they "lost" the bolts and didn't bother recovering them? Obviously nothings loose on the car or it would have shown up by now.

The other option is it has had a new engine, so they could be "spare" bolts from whoever changed the engine and didn't notice they had lost a pair because they used some off the other engine?

Your "floating" sensor plug is for the impulse sender, which is a ferrous ring which should be located on plug lead no 4. The ecu uses it for timing.

Them bolts look well out of place. Not bell housing are they :-S

Ibos, good idea but that is plugged in.

Did what I should have done with the car as soon as I got it, get it up and go over it from end to end.

First thing noticed, removed wheels, both rears have spigot rings

One front has nothing and one front has this

That would explain the front vibration.

Front snubber mount-rubber cracked/torn, already knew that, however both seciring bolts were loose Shocked so tightened them back up.

And this is the lovely job that was made of the exhaust, will need to sort this

Rear anti roll bar is TINY Laughing

Found my loose bolts

other end

One came out, other cant be removed with downpipe on, didnt have any nuts the right size unfortunatly, will need to get some.

Threw on a set of steels and car now looks like this

Anyway, drove the car and no vibration, there is only a tiny bit of movement in the engine, hopefully a new front mount will sort that, should be here on friday. Its so much better to drive, plus a half decent set of tyres makes all the difference.

Underneath the car looks pretty good, somebody has sprayed the wheels on the car at some point Rolling Eyes so callipers are a bit silver. Discs/pads ok. brake lines ok.

It has sports suspension as it should. Very Happy

Anyway a fairly productive hour or so, car drives so much better

Well, looking at the missing plug next to the impulse sender, mounted on the manifold, it looks like your lambda... Con't be tho?

Ibos-will look into lambda wiring, aint even looked for the thing yet.

Got strut top mounts and front snubber mount on today, car is really quite nice to drive now Very Happy

When I took the snubber mount cup bracket off the body for a look, you can see it is an improvment over the 90 one, however there is still an airgap between the bush and the bracket. I was thinking of adapting a bracket (read welding in the right diameter pipe) so it was a tight fit on the rubber bush and then no slop at all once bolted down, does anybody see any issues with this have any opnions?

Fitted the correct steering wheel as the previous owner had nabbed its original one. So much nicer than the four spoke.

Picked up an undamaged boot lid from a breakers

Is it straightforward to swap the lock mechanism or lock barrel over?
