Can someone tell me what kind of use one should expect from the reservoir. I have to top up about twice a year.

In any hydraulic system oil topping in the reservoir up means you have some leakage past seals. Are you using the correct Audi fluid, I think its G00200-color green when new? Have you ever flushed the system thro and replaced the oil as this helps to prolong the life of the system components?
